Fakten

  • All the Technion Faculties were located in the building until 1953, when most were gradually moved to the new Technion City campus until 1965.
  • From 1965 to 1986, it housed only the faculty of Architecture, the Technion's first faculty, and then became home to the Israel National Museum of Science.
  • From 1986 the building went a ten year restoration process which adhered to Baerwald’s original design and removed many internal partitions.
  • The main building is symmetrical with an emphasis on the elevated central entrance, crowned with a large zinc dome.
  • Construction was delayed during WW1, during which the partially completed building was used as a military hospital.
  • Prof. Albert Einstein, first Technion Council President, planted a palm tree in front of the main entrance on his visit to the construction site on 11.2.1923.
  • The building was part of Baerwald’s masterplan of an open corridor leading directly from Hadar to the bay, lined with public buildings alongside public gardens.
  • The 46 Dunam plot was bought from 1909 to 1912 from German Templars, by German Ezra (Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden) foundation chairmain, Dr. Paul Nathan.
  • A synthesis between Oriental and Jewish motifs, the facade features a flat roof with pointed crenellations and arcaded passages, with symbolic forms such as a Star of David.
  • The design is a mix of both oriental and European motifs, and is built from sandstone and limestone that were quarried in Tantura and Atlit.
