  • In 1937 Ethiopian Emperor Haille Selassi attended a service commemorating those who died in the Abyssinian war.
  • The church was consecrated on January 28, 1730.
  • St. George's was referred to in works by Charles Dickens.
  • In October 2001 the church was declared a World Monument Fund heritage site; various donations allowed major renovation works, completing October 2006.
  • The stepped tower was influenced by Pliny the Elder's description of the Mausoleum at Helicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • Atop the tower stands the statue of a Romanesque George I, wearing a toga.
  • The portico is modelled on the Temple of Baalbek in Lebanon.
  • The spire featured in William Hogarth's sketch 'Gin Lane' of 1751.
  • Anthony Trollope, the Victorian novelist was baptised in St. George's.
  • The funeral of suffragette Emily Davison (who died throwing herself in front of the King's horse at Tattenham Corner) was held in the church in 1913.
  • The church is Grade I Listed.
