Fakten

  • This cathedral has a carillon named ‘le Bien Sonné', with a peal of 56 bells.
  • During the First World War, on the first of April 1918 a fire ignited by a bombardment damaged some woodwork and caused the vaults of the choir to collapse.
  • The width of the western façade is 32.8 m.
  • The central nave (without any side aisles) measures 10.50 m in width.
  • This cathedral is one the first gothic cathedrals in France.
  • On July 19, 1293 the cathedral was heavily damaged after a severe fire in the city which lasted for 36 hours. Most of the damage is located on the west side of the church.
  • After this fire disaster, the higher vaults were reconstructed. Also the northern tower and several chapels were rebuilt.
  • The construction started with the choir and the transept.
  • This cathedral suffered enormously from the rage and vandalism of the French revolution. In fact many destroyed architectural features were never completely repaired: only traces are left of the decorations on the western façade.
  • During the 15th century several renovations took place: the first one from 1460 – 1462 and the second one after 1475.
  • Previously four other cathedrals had been built on the same spot as the current one.
  • The western façade is the last part of the construction.
  • The height under the vault of the central nave is 22.5 meters.
