Fakten

  • Most recently, a restoration by Julian Harrap in 1983-93 added tubular steel trusses to support the roof and the surrounding grounds were also re-landscaped. The exterior was also cleaned so that the white exterior once again gleams.
  • On Good Friday in 1850, the church was gutted by fire and subsequently restored by Philip Hardwick and John Morris.
  • It was restored in 1891 by Sir Arthur Blomfield and again after WWII bomb damage.
  • Cited in Simon Jenkins' 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
  • St. Anne's Limehouse was one of only 14 churches built under the Act of 1711 which proposed to build 50 new churches in London.
  • It cost £32,232 8s 7d to build, plus £400 for the site.
  • Construction took from 1712 to 1724, and it cost so much to build that the church couldn't afford a Rector until 6 years after completion. Consequently, it wasn't consecrated until 1730.
