Fakten

  • A church was originally built on the site in 1656 as the Chapel of Ease. In 1669, it was rebuilt as the Parish Church of Shadwell.
  • The current structure replaced the previous building in 1820. It was the last of 5 London churches built during the Restoration.
  • St. Paul's is also known as the Church of Sea Captains. Captain James Cook was an active parishioner, and his son was baptised here in 1763.
  • John Wesley, founder of the Wesleyan church, also used to preach here, while Jane Randolph, mother of the former US President Thomas Jefferson, was baptised here in 1720.
