Fakten

  • A church has stood on this site since 1101 and was originally a leper hospital founded by Matilda, Queen of Henry I; it was dissolved in 1539, its former chapel becoming the parish church in 1547.
  • Prior to the current church a Gothic brick building occupied the site which dated from 1630; this was demolished due to damp probably caused by the surrounding burial sites of Plague victims.

  • Contained within is a Schmidt organ dating from 1671 whilst the pulpit dates from 1675.
  • St. Giles was the last church along the route to Tyburn (now Marble Arch) where felons were hanged.
  • The church underwent minor alterations by Sir Arthur Blomfield and William Butterfield in 1875 and 1896.
  • The church glass was damaged by bombs during World War II.
  • St. Giles was restored in 1952-1953.
