Fakten

  • The hospital was the first facility west of the Mississippi for the mentally ill.
  • In 1856 the Texas State Legislature approved funding for a 380 acre institution north of the city. Construction began on the first wing in 1857 with completion in 1861. The east wing and final section was completed in 1865.
  • The design of the building called for 4-foot thick stone walls to hush the noises of "disturbed individuals".
  • The building's two cupolas promoted airflow in the hot Texas weather at a time before air conditioning. High ceilings and transoms over all doors also allowed more airflow through the building.
  • The hospital first opened in May of 1861. It is the third oldest extant public building in Texas.
  • The name was changed from State Lunatic Asylum to the more politically correct Austin State Hospital in 1925.
