Fakten

  • Construction of this lighthouse was completed in June 1918.
  • The lens for this lighthouse went on display in 1916 at the World's Fair in San Francisco.
  • Standing on the jetty it stood 91 feet above sea level.
  • The lighthouse's beacon was switched off for five months prior to November 12, 1918 due to mandatory blackout enforcements initiated due to World War I.
  • The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1972.
  • After years of rust and decay, a powerful storm collapsed the lighthouse on May 2, 2000. Just six months earlier a proposal was made to move it to Galveston Island State Park where it would be restored and turned into a museum.
  • The ruins of the lighthouse are at the end of a jetty in the Gulf of Mexico on the eastern end of Galveston Island off of East Beach Drive via Seawall Boulevard.
