Fakten

  • Since it was one of few fully-enclosed buildings with sufficient space, Lockheed had planned to use the hangar to construct and assemble the first nuclear-stage rocket engine [aka Reactor-in-Flight Test (REIT) stage]; however, the program was eventually cancelled.
  • At the time of its construction, the hangar was the second tallest structure in the South Bay after the Bank of Italy Building in San Jose.
  • The Moffett Field Museum was located inside the hangar from 1993 until 2002, when the hangar was forced to close after the discovery of PCB contamination.
  • This huge dirigible hangar was originally built to house the USS Macon, a rigid-frame airship (zeppelin) that measured 785 feet in length and 146 feet in height.
  • The Hangar is located at what was once known as Moffett Field Naval Air Station (NAS), a facility now called Moffett Federal Airfield and run by the NASA Ames Research Center.
  • The hangar's massive "orange-peel" doors each weigh 500 tons and are each powered by a 150 horsepower motor.
  • The interior height, from the floor to the ceiling, is 198 feet.
