Fakten

  • The cathedral sits on one of Britain's oldest sites of Christian worship; a 6th century Celtic Cross which stood near the old church can be seen near the door of the Chapter House.
  • A new West front was built around 1220, whilst the Chapter House also dates from the 13th century.
  • Norman windows were replaced by new ones in the Decorated style in the 14th century.
  • Construction of the North West tower commenced in the late 15th century.
  • The 12th century tower collapsed in 1722.
  • The South West tower and spire date from 1869.
  • Much of the 19th century work was destroyed by aerial bombardment in World War II though this was eventually restored.
