  • Prior to the current building, the original abbey was founded in 1087 by Robert FitzHamon.
  • Many of the abbey's original bells were melted down to make cannon for Henry VIII's warships.
  • Overall, the abbey is dominated by the architectural styles of the Decorated-style chancel and the Norman piers and arches of the eight-bay Nave which dates from 1121.
  • Cited in Simon Jenkins' 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
  • Masonry from the late 14th to early 15th centuries is also in evidence.
  • The abbey was further embellished in the first half of the 14th century in the Decorated style.
  • Tewkesbury Abbey is the second largest parish church in England.
  • The original Norman abbey was consecrated in 1121.
