  • In 1307, a large part of the original building burnt down; it was restored in the 14th century.
  • The abbey has a stained glass window created by Sir Edward Burne Jones.
  • Buried in the abbey are six High Stewards of Scotland, Princess Marjory Bruce (daughter of Scottish King Robert the Bruce) as well as the wives of King Roberts II and III.
  • The transepts and choir were destroyed in the mid-16th century when the central tower collapsed; they were left in ruins until the late 19th and early 20th centuries when they were restored.
  • Originally located on the side of a hill near Houston, the abbey is home to a Celtic cross which is over 1,000 years old.
  • Dating from the 12th century, the oldest surviving parts of the abbey are the Transitional style Processional Doorway at the southeast corner of the nave along with the first three window bays in the south nave aisle.
  • The abbey's current organ has 4 manuals, 65 stops and 5,448 pipes.
  • On exhibition in the abbey is a piece of 15th century slate music which is Scotland's earliest surviving example of polyphonic music; it was found in the abbey's drains in the 1990s.
