Fakten

  • The memorial is capped with a sculpture of a British lion designed by Sir William Reid Dick.
  • The Gate is supported on piles which descend to a depth of 10.9 metres (36 ft).
  • The Menin Gate is a war memorial to British and Commonwealth soldiers who died fighting in the Ypres Salient during World War I.
  • The Menin Gate straddles the roadway and every night at 8.00pm the road is closed to traffic whilst buglers pipe The Last Post.
  • The Menin gate is constructed from French limestone.
  • An inscription above the gate reads "To the Armies of the British Empire who stood here from 1914 to 1918 and to those of their dead who have no known grave.".
  • The memorial was inaugurated on Sunday 24th July 1927, by Field Marshall Lord Plumer.
  • Inscribed on the memorial are the names of 54,900 of the 'missing' who died in action.
