Fakten

  • When built in 1896, the Alhambra included 3000 seats in a proscenium theater designed for stage productions. The building included retail stores at ground level and offices above.
  • When constructed, the second floor of the building included a indoor bicycle track.
  • The penthouse, located at the southwest corner of the building, was designed as a photography studio with primarily glass window walls. This permitted the use of natural light to expose glass plate negative photographs.
  • Originally known as the Uihlein Theater, after the family who owned the Schlitz Brewery. The name was changed to the Alhambra within 2 years of opening because of the consistent inability of artists visiting the theater to correctly pronounce the name (sounds like E-line).
  • It was converted to a movie theater in 1911.
  • The western half of the Henry S. Reuss Federal Plaza now occupies this site.
