Fakten

  • Fort Point was built to defend the entrance to San Francisco Bay from attack by enemy ships.
  • The Fort was designed to support the mounting of 126 large cannons.
  • By 1900, the last cannons were removed, and the Fort was henceforth used for storage and training purposes.
  • Fort Point is the only Third System brick fort on the west coast of the U.S.
  • Between 1933 and 1937, the Fort was used as a base of operations and staging area for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • The chief architect of the Golden Gate Bridge, Joseph Strauss, wished that that Fort Point be "preserved and restored as a national monument", and designed the bridge with an archway to elevate the pre-span roadway above the Fort.
  • Fort Point was named a National Historic Site on October 16, 1970.
