Fakten

  • The top floor features a revolving restaurant and banquet hall.
  • This is virtually the same proposal presented in 2003 for Downtown Kansas City, Kansas, but the financial package never came together.
  • NOAA records say tornados have occured in all 50 states of the USA. However, the most frequent occurences are between April and June in the Midwest US, which is commonly called "tornado alley".
  • An extensive lighting system at the base of the tower and a misting function is intended to create the illusion of the churning and twisting of a real tornado.
  • In 2007, when the State of Kansas failed to issue $40 million of "STAR Bonds" to complete the private financing package, the proposal was scrapped.
  • At the base of the tower, 100,000 square feet of mixed use space is planned. It will include "a weather related education center, an arcade, an inside miniature golf course and souvenir shops", along with food service and retail services.
  • The tower is inspired by the natural weather phenomenon, tornados. The 1939 movie the "Wizard of Oz" depicted Dorothy's dilemma after a tornado struck her Kansas home.
  • The tower will measure 650 feet to its roof, topped by a 350 antenna mast.
