Fakten

  • This was the cathedral's second design proposal and would have featured a dome of 51 metres (167 feet) in diameter; the internal height would have measured 91 metres (300 feet).
  • So vast was the structure that if built, it could have swallowed St. Paul's Cathedral and would have been the world's largest church after St. Peter's Basilica.
  • Prior to cancellation, the project had been costed at £27,000,000, a colossal sum in its day.
  • The nave and transept, apses and sacristies would have been lined with a total of 53 altars.
  • If seen through to completion, it is estimated that the cathedral would have taken two centuries to construct.
  • Although never completed, the foundation stone was laid on 5th June, 1933 whilst construction of the crypt ceased in 1941; the crypt has been incorporated into the current Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King.
  • The cathedral was to be constructed from silver-grey granite from Ireland and grey-pink St. Helens brick.
