  • At the time of opening, the organ was the biggest in the UK. Today the Town Hall's organ has more than 6,000 pipes and is still larger than most cathedral organs.
  • Conductors and musicians that have performed at Town Hall include Mendelssohn, Edward Elgar, Yehudi Menuhin, Rackmaninoff, Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Simon Rattle.
  • The construction bill for Town Hall totalled £25,000 with the original budget set at £17,000.
  • The Town Hall re-opened in 2007 after undergoing a £35m renovation.
  • The 60s onwards saw performances from mega stars that included the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Elton John, Van Morrison, The Kinks and Duran Duran.
  • The Town Hall is made of a stone called 'Anglesey Marble' which came from quarries in North Wales. It was shipped 80 miles by sea and 100 miles by canal to Birmingham.
  • The building is Grade I Listed.
  • Town Hall's first event, in October 1834, was the Triennial Musical Festival, held in aid of the Birmingham General Hospital.
