  • The original design called for a tower and spire which proved too expensive. To generate funds for the aforementioned, a crypt was built to provide income for the construction.
  • The church's design is influenced by Greek temples.
  • The church was consecrated on 7th May, 1829 by the Bishop of Winchester, Dr. Sumner.
  • Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman described St. James as the finest church built by the Waterloo Churches Commissioners.
  • The peal of ten bells was cast from cannon captured from Napoleon's army at the Battle of Waterloo.
  • The church can accommodate a congregation of around 2,000.
  • The spire is a copy of that which tops Sir Christopher Wren's St. Stephen Walbrook.
