Fakten

  • This 52-ft. granite obelisk stands in Memorial Cemetery on the east edge of Hinckley. It commemorates the great forest fire of 1894, one of the worst fire disasters ever in the history of the United States.
  • On September 1, 1894, three separate fires merged to create a firestorm which consumed 420 square miles (1088 square km), completely destroying the towns of Hinckley, Brook Park, and Mission Creek, and severely burning Sandstone.
  • Another massive fire in 1918 rivaled this one, burning much of western Carlton County (about 40 miles north of Hinckley), including the city of Cloquet, and the towns of Moose Lake and Kettle River.
  • Official reports indicated that 418 individuals were killed, but unofficial accounts point to close to 800 deaths.
