Fakten

  • The architect, John Madin, took inspiration from Boston City Hall when designing Birmingham Central Library.
  • Beneath the library runs a ring road and an uncompleted bus station.
  • Birmingham City Council appointed Capita Symonds in 2006 to project manage and develop a business case for a new central library called Library of Birmingham.
  • In November 2009, Birmingham City Council were granted a certificate of immunity from listing and given five years to demolish the Central Library and begin the redevelopment of the site.
  • Designed in the architectural style of brutalism, the library is built in the shape of an inverted ziggurat.
  • On completion of the Library of Birmingham, the old library will be demolished enabling the £1 billion redevelopment of the Paradise Circus complex.
  • Harold Wilson performed the formal opening on 12 January 1974 and at the time, it was the largest public library in Europe.
  • In November 2009, Culture Minister Margaret Hodge ruled the 1970s library was not a building of architectural importance and rejected calls to list the building.
  • On visiting Birmingham Central Library, Prince Charles described the building as looking like "a place where books are incinerated, not kept".
