One of the 20 smallest countries in the world with a total land area of about 710 square kilometres, Singapore consists of one main island and 63 other smaller islands. It takes about an hour to drive end to end. As it lies slightly more than one degree north of the equator, there are no seasons and it is hot and wet year round with an average temperature of 27c. The tallest point in Singapore is Bukit Timah, which at 161 metres high is shorter than the tallest buildings in the country. As the second most densely populated country in the world, the city houses over 90% of its population in high-rise public housing flats in 20 new towns spread across the island and in other smaller estates. A significant number of high-rise private housing developments are located close to the commercial Downtown in Southern Singapore, along the East Coast, and the remainder spread across the various towns. Singapore's tallest buildings are located in Southern Singapore where the historical heart of the city is located. As one of the world's largest commercial centres, significant clusters of high-rise commercial buildings may be found in Raffles Place, Shenton Way, Tanjong Pagar and Marina Square. Singapore's new commercial Downtown is being developed around the Marina Bay district, which neighbours the existing Downtown. Due to air traffic control restrictions, however, no building in Singapore is allowed to exceed 280 metres in height, although this restriction may be relaxed for selected buildings in the Marina Bay district. Today, the city has five buildings in the world's 100 tallest office buildings list, two buildings in the world's 100 tallest residential buildings list, a hotel in the world's top 15 tallest hotels list, and is within the top five positions in both Emporis' Skyline Ranking and Most High-rise Buildings lists. It is also home to the world's current tallest Observation Wheel.
