Home to a population of just under 200,000, Aberdeen is a port city in the North East of Scotland. Built at the mouth of two major Scottish rivers, the Dee and the Don, Aberdeen is known as the Granite City owing to the famous, locally quarried and widely exported building material. Traditional industries such as fishing and farming still flourish in and around the city but Aberdeen's buoyant economy is fuelled by the oil industry, earning the city a new epithet as the 'Oil Capital of Europe'. The majority of high-rise buildings in Aberdeen are council-built tower blocks, and they take a back seat to the many granite towers and spires that have dominated the city for centuries, giving Aberdeen a truly unique skyline.
