In 963, Siegfried I built his castle, named Lucilinburhuc (meaning small castle), on the Bock Fiels (meaning rock). From this small settlement the city of Luxembourg was formed. In the following centuries the settlement was expanded with new fortifications. By the end of the 12th century, the city had expanded westward around the new St. Nicholas Church (nowadays called Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg). Therefore new walls were built that included an area of 50,000 m². Today Luxembourg is the capital city of the small country Luxembourg. The city is rich of historical buildings and transforms into a European metropolis with new boulevards being constructed in Kirchberg and other districts.
