By the 1700s the area in and around the Credit River Valley was inhabited almost exclusively by an Indian tribe named the Mississaugas, and Europeans exploring this region at the time aptly named it the “Mississauga Tract.” From 1805 onward white settlers started purchasing parts of the tract and settling there. Numerous towns and villages sprang up in what then became commonly referred to as the “Home District.” In 1968 the Home District communities of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Malton, and Meadowvale Village merged to form the Town of Mississauga. In 1974 Port Credit and Streetsville joined the union and Mississauga was incorporated as a city. As an amalgam, Mississauga is a city of many smaller nodes and one larger, relatively new core area. Though too large to be dismissed as simply another suburb of Toronto (on its own it is in fact the sixth largest city in Canada), the landscape is overwhelmingly suburban in nature.
