Darwin, Australia's only tropical capital city, is one of the most cosmopolitan places in Australia because of its position close to Indonesia and about halfway between Singapore and Sydney. It was established in 1869 as Palmerston and renamed in 1911 in honour of the British naturalist Charles Darwin. It was heavily bombed in the Second World War and almost flattened by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve 1974. Around half of the Northern Territory's population lives within a 40 kilometer radius of Darwin and, like the city itself, on average they are younger than the rest of Australia. It may be the city's relaxed lifestyle, the magnet of its attractions, the haunting majesty of the monsoonal storms, or the smell of the tropics - but people who experience Darwin never forget it. Darwin is heavily influenced by its Southeast Asian neighbors to the north, and by the more than fifty different cultures that live harmoniously in the city. It is this fantastic mix of cultural character, mystery, beauty and unlimited potential that leaves an indelible image in the minds of all who visit.
