Located east of Akron, Kent is the largest city in Portage County and the home of Kent State University. The area, originally known as Franklin Mills, was first settled in 1805 by John Haymaker who erected a gristmill along the Cuyahoga River. The area gained its present name, four years prior to its 1867 incorporation as a village, from entrepreneur Marvin Kent. Kent oversaw the Franklin and Warren Railroad connection to Cleveland and its eventual merger to become part the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad linking New York City and St. Louis.
