Located on the west bank of the Pearl River, Jackson is the seat of Hinds County and the capitol of Mississippi. To accommodate the need of a more centrally located capitol city, Jackson was established by an act of the Mississippi state legislature on November 28, 1821. The newly formed capitol was named in honor of then Major General Andrew Jackson, who would later go on to become President of the United States. During the American Civil War, the Union army, under the orders of General William Tecumseh Sherman, would burn the city to the ground on three separate occasions. In the time from the reconstruction through the turn of the 20th century, the city would see modest growth and have a population of just over 8,000 by about 1900. It was during the 20th century that Jackson would evolve into Mississippi’s largest city and serve as its cultural and economic powerhouse. Today the city boasts the state’s most impressive skyline with the Mississippi State Capitol serving as its focal point since its completion in 1903.
