High Point is the third city in the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area after Greensboro and Winston-Salem. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Greensboro. High Point is famous as the home of the International Home Furnishings Center (Southern Furniture Market), which is held twice a year. Besides the IHFC, furniture and hosiery manufacture as well as High Point University are important to the local economy. High Point began as a Quaker Community around 1750. The town was not laid out until 1853, however, when the state constructed the North Carolina Railroad. The village was named "High Point" because it was the highest point on the railroad line between Goldsboro and Charlotte. High Point's importance as a trading center quickly grew after the completion of the plank road between Salem and Fayetteville in 1854, making it the crossroads of the state's two most important transportation corridors. Incorporation came in 1859. The abundance of hardwood timber in the area attracted furniture manufacturers in 1888, helping to transform High Point into a modern industrial center.
