Lynchburg is located on the James Rives about 100 miles (160 km) west of Richmond. It is beautifully located in the western Piedmont, within sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Lynchburg has a diversified industrial base, and is home to several colleges. The city was founded by John Lynch in 1786. Incorporated as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1852, it grew large in the 19th Century as a center of railroad transportation and as a center of the tobacco industry.
