Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It lies on three hills along the Alabama River in the south-central part of the state. Montgomery was formed in 1819 by uniting two earlier settlements and was named for Revolutionary War hero Brigadier General Richard Montgomery. It became the Alabama state capital in 1846. In 1861, the Confederate States of America was founded here with Montgomery as its first capital. Martin Luther King began his civil rights crusade here in 1955. The seat of Montgomery County, the city's economy is supported largely by government employment at the federal, state, and local levels. Other economic activity includes wholesale trade, barge shipping on the Alabama River, and manufacture of furniture, glass products, machinery, paper, and textiles.
