Lafayette is the seat of Tippecanoe County and the center of a rich agricultural region in West Central Indiana. The first European settlements in the region were at Fort Ouiatenon on the Wabash River. Downtown is centered on the spectacular Tippecanoe County Courthouse and blocks of preserved 19th and early 20th century commercial buildings. Directly across the river is West Lafayette, home of Purdue University, the land grand institution for the state of Indiana. Lafayette has a diversified industrial base with important products including automobiles, agricultural and construction equipment, and pharmaceuticals.
