The city of Olympia is Washington State's capital. It was settled in the 1850s and became the territorial government seat in 1859. When Washington achieved statehood on November 11, 1889, the cities of Seattle, Walla Walla, and Ellensburg tried to beat out Olympia for the title. Olympia won despite having a smaller population than Seattle. Today, the city has grown to over 40,000 and has several mid-rise buildings – mostly government in origin.
