Terre Haute is the trade center for an agricultural and coal strip-mining region. It is located on the Wabash River in western Indiana, 70 miles west of Indianapolis and 5 miles east of the Illinois border. Named "high ground" by French traders, a fort was founded here by William Henry Harrison in 1811. The community was incorporated as a town in 1816 and as a city in 1853. It is the seat of Vigo County. Industrial products include metals, chemicals, medicines, processed food, and paint. The home of Indiana State University, it is also the hometown of socialist labor leader Eugene V. Debs and labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa. The population has remained essentially stable since the 1920s, and most of the city's commercial buildings date from the first decades of the 20th century.
