Manassas is an independent city and serves as the county seat of Prince William County. The city is thirty miles west of Washington, DC off of Interstate 66. The source of its name is thought to derive from Manasseh, the name of a Jewish innkeeper at Manassas Gap. The city originated as Manassas Junction in 1852 at the divergence of two major railroads. This strategic importance led to the First (1861) and Second (1862) Battles of Bull Run during the Civil War. After the war, the town was incorporated in 1872 as Manassas and became the county seat of Prince William County in 1892. Manassas became an independent city in 1975. It is well known for its Civil War history and Old Town historic district. The Manassas National Battlefield Park is located on Lee Highway
