Paarl, meaning "Pearl" in Dutch, is the second largest centre in the Western Cape province of South Africa, after Cape Town, which lies 56 km to the south. Apart from being an important cultural and educational town, Paarl is also home to a thriving wine industry, boasting some of the finest, oldest and largest wineries in the country. Paarl played an enormously important role in the emancipation of the Afrikaans language from Dutch, and in the struggle for official recognition of the language. This is commemorated by the Afrikaans Language Monument which towers above Paarl on the very famous granite domes of Paarl Berg, the second largest granite outcrop in the world. The nearby villages of Wellington, Mbekweni and Dal Josafat form part of the greater Drakenstein municipality, of which Paarl is the epicentre.
