The first Europeans to reach Cameroon were the Portuguese during the 15th century. Cameroon was one of the larger slave trading countries up to the time the Germans took control (1884) France and Britain divided the territory in 1916 after Germany lost WWI.
The government has been relatively stable over the past several decades, which has helped this country build a good economic base and infrastructure. This has led to high-rise construction in the larger cities. Capital is Yaounde.
